The Havengebouw building, which houses the offices of the Port of Amsterdam, as well as some residences, has 4 elevators with the following specs:
- Elevators Brand: Liftcentraal
- Load: 1150kg.
- Distance: 48,8m
- Speed: 2m/s
- Variable Frequency Drive: Fuji
- Traffic: 750 trips/office day
Due to the limitations of energy consumption and contracting in the Netherlands, there is a need to make the installation of this iconic building by the shores of the IJ more efficient, to comply with energy regulations and improve the energy label of buildings.

To enhance the installation’s efficiency, the ERS (Energy Recovery System) solution was chosen to capture energy wasted during braking, store it in supercapacitors, and reuse it later, reducing consumption peaks from the electrical grid.
To achieve this, the proposal from the engineering and maintenance firm Liftcentraal and participating lift advisor company PI Liftconsultants was to improve efficiency through the renovation of the installation.
To contribute to this improvement, it is decided to include Epic Power energy recovery management solutions. All the measurements needed and installation was successfully carried out through our authorized agent in the Netherlands: i2motion – Architects in motion.
i2motion and Epic Power have the same DNA and we speak the same ‘power electronics language‘.

Once the sizing study of the installation was completed to maximize energy utilization, 3 ERS units were installed in parallel on each of the 4 elevators.

In this way, full optimization and maximum energy recovery are achieved.
Here we can see the energy generated by braking per hour on an average day:

The results obtained from installing the Epic Power Lifts ERS energy recovery solution speak for themselves:

Current situation:
- The average energy consumption per office day of the elevator drive (Fuji LM2 & Motor) is 10,16 kWh.
- The average energy generated by the elevator, which is dissipated in the braking resistor, per office day is 3,15 kWh.
- This corresponds to 30,1% (3,15 / 10,16 kWh)
If the energy generated by the lift is stored and reused per office day by using the epic power ERS units supplied by i2motion.
- The average energy consumption per office day of the elevator drive (Fuji LM2 & Motor) is then reduced to 7,01kWh (10,16 – 3,15 kWh)
- The average generated & reused energy per office day remains 3,15 kWh. This is the energy saved per office day
- If the occupancy of the building increases, energy savings will increase proportionately
